FAQS

What is cataract/motibindu?

Cataract is the clouding/opacification of the natural lens of the eye.

At what age does cataract occur?

Cataract can occur at any age, though most commonly it is found in individuals above the age of 60 years. This is called senile cataract.

Why does cataract occur?

The natural lens of the eye is made of a proteinaceous material. Denaturation of this protein can occur due to age (oxidative damage), excessive exposure to ultraviolet light, trauma, inflammation of the eye, diabetes, drug induced, genetic and other causes. This results in the lens losing its transparency.

What is the treatment of cataract?

Cataract is treated by surgical removal of the opaque lens by a process called Phacoemulsification. This is followed by implantation of an artificial lens in the eye as a replacement to the natural lens.
